FAQ

Questions?

Check out this list of most asked. If you don’t see what you’re looking for feel free to contact me:

General

What is the trim size?

The trim size is the size of the printed book that you choose before printing. (Ex: 5×8, 6×9, 5.5x 8.5)

How do I choose a trim size?

Trim size is completely up to the author and their preference.
Things to keep in mind: Thicker book, go smaller. Lower cost, go bigger.
Trim size is your preference. You can look at existing books to see which size you like best, then choose one closest to it on your publishing platform.

Where do I find my purchased covers/formatting? I don’t see them!

After you purchase your cover, all communication and files will be delivered to the email you provided at checkout. Please be sure to acknowledge each email, so the designer knows you have received and accepted your design.

How do I get my book on the portfolio page?

Book Cover It retains the right to display work provided in its portfolio. All book covers will be displayed as a decent sized thumbnail. All formatting jobs are displayed as a single page from the book, usually a chapter beginning.

All books will be linked to where the books are listed for sale, to hopefully help the author sell books.

This method helps both the artist and the author.

Can I get a refund?

As an author and artist, I strive to make all my clients happy. However, due to the digital nature of the work, I can not offer a refund after files have been delivered. This is not a product that can be returned and not used after refund as the author will always have the option to use the files even if a refund has been given.

I am happy to make revisions, as long as they are related to formatting or cover mistakes, or are preventing the book from being published.

You may ask for  refund anytime before you receive the files.

Book Covers

Cover Art: How does it work?

One of the best things about Book Cover It is that  it’s easy. Just select a design, select your options, fill out the requirements, and purchase!  Your cover will be customized and delivered you quickly.

Can I change the font and font colors?

It is best to use the suggested font and layout of each premade book cover for the most professional results. To keep prices low and the delivery time short, the artist Does Not offer changes to Premade Cover art or fonts. Adjustments will be made according to the length of the title, subtitles, ect, that best compliments the design.

You are allowed to purchase only the psd source file of any cover and customize the fonts to your liking.

I want to change something on my cover, but I bought my cover a long time ago. How can I make changes?

Because the source file is included, you can make as many changes to the words of your covers as many times as needed.  Note: Some covers may be made with special fonts. The designer will list the font information in the license that comes with your cover. Some may require purchase for changes to work, some may not.

Can I use the cover art on more than one book?

No. Each design is licensed for one book. If you are looking for a series you can find matching covers on the site or contact the designer and ask for a variation of the original cover that can be used for the new book. (See next question (Can I personally change the art I buy?) For more information.

Can I personally change the art on the cover that I buy?

Absolutely Not! The cover is yours and you can to do what you want with it as long as it is in compliance with the license for the images used.  Although you can change the fonts if you choose using the psd source file, you can not change the art image itself. Some of  individual images that were used to create your cover art may be paid stock images, which are copyrighted by the photographers  who have strict rules about the use of their images.  If the designer purchased  stock images, only he or she has the right to use or manipulate the images used to create your cover.

If I change my mind can I get a refund or exchange it for something else?

No. Due to the digital nature of our products there are no refunds or exchanges once a delivery has been sent.

How long will it take to get my purchased product?

Book Covers: Normally, your customized files will be delivered to your email within 1-3 business days. (The artist reserves weekends, holidays, and specified vacation time as none work days.) This could be subject to change due to high demand. You can find the current delivery times in the top banner of the website as well as any specified days the artist will be away.

Can I get a custom design?

No. Due to a heavy work load, the artist is not taking custom requests at this time.

I found a cover on your site that amazing, but it’s not exactly what I’m looking for, can the cover be changed?

No. The artist has limited time to devote to creating covers and chooses to post work on this site because it eliminates the extra tweaking and editing process. (Remember, a cover does not have to exactly portray what is in the story.  The best practice is to find a cover that calls out to you. If it grabs your attention it will most likely grab the reader’s attention too.)

Can you reserve cover art for me?

All cover art is first come first serve. To reserve any cover for future use, you must purchase both ebook and full paperback. You will receive a psd source file and  you can come back at any time in the future for customization or customize it with Photoshop if you wish.

I saved a cover in my wishlist. Does this hold the design for me?

No. Saving a design on your wishlist does not prevent it from being sold.

Why is my printed copy of the book a little bit different in terms of color and brightness compared to the way it looks on my screen?

There will always be a difference between art seen on the screen and on paper (when it’s printed) because ink can never reproduce screen colors 100%. Computer monitors and mobile screens give off a colored light known as RGB, while in printed materials the color model is known as CMYK (for colored ink). All designs were created using CMYK (Print) colors and should not look much different, although the darkness of the print can vary from publisher to publisher.

Do I need a model release?

Depends on the art. If the person is recognizable you will need a model release. Paid stock images include model releases in their licensing. If the person is a 3D rendered model then you will not need one. No public domain images containing recognizable people are allowed to be used in designs on this site.

While there are many pictures of real people available in the creative common community and other sites may use them to create their premade covers, it can still cause a problem for authors because the photographer can give up his right to the photo he took, but that does not revoke the rights of the model in the photo. Since most creative commons pictures do not come with model releases, the artists are only allowed to use them in a way that eliminates the need for model releases. Even if you don’t buy a cover from Book Cover It you are strongly urged to ask and verify a model release if the cover you buy from other sites contain real people.

Here is an interesting article that I found that explains when you do and don’t need a model release. https://digital-photography-school.com/model-releases-need-know/ It is the full responsibility of the author to research the rules and decide if he or she wants to use covers containing these types of images.

If I sell more than 250,000 ebooks/print books, do I need to buy an extended license?

Yes, if paid stock images have been used in your cover, you will need to buy an extended license, but we hope you do sell 250,000 books! We hope you have to get those extended licenses because that means you have a best seller on your hands and the cost of the images will have paid for themselves. 😀 . Book Cover It has no control over this.  The extended license is a requirement of the stock houses.  The fees can differ, but are usually around $75.  Designers are required to use 2 or more images, so it could be higher. Once an extended license is paid for, it is good for life. It is the full responsibility of the author to research the rules on using stock and decide if he or she wants to use covers containing these types of images.
Covers created with only created commons images do not need an extended license.

I found another cover that uses the same image as one that’s on the cover that I purchased. How is that possible when I bought a one-of-a-kind design?

Book Cover It designs are unique because the designer uses 2 or more images. But these stock images are available for anyone to buy. If you compare the similar covers, they will be different because it is rare that designers would use the same combination of images to make their cover. If you are looking to get a book cover that is completely different from any cover anywhere, you’ll want to hire an illustrator, a photographer, or  a model and shoot the custom photos yourself. But even big publishing houses use stock images for most of their books.

Can I have more or less text on the cover?

Yes. The amount of text on the book covers are just suggested examples. You may add a subtitle, a tagline or an endorsement on the cover if you want. It’s up to you. The artist will guide you during the customization process on the appropriate amount of text for your cover.

Can I have the PSD file to edit myself?

Yes. That is what our site is about. Every premade cover includes a source file that can be edited later at anytime.

I need to make changes to my finished cover and I don't want to do it myself.

That’s okay. The artist will be happy to make these changes for you at a easy to afford cost. Check out the extra services page or contact the artist for more information.

How should an Author credit the designer in the front pages of the book?

We love to give credit where credit is due! You can credit the designer this way: Jennie Lyne Hiott@bookcoverit.com

I chose a cover, but the site won’t let me purchase it. What should I do?

Try clearing your browser cache.

I opened the source file in photoshop to make changes, but it's for full cover. How do I create front cover only?

Your ebook template is made from the full cover template. Simply flatten the design crop the front cover and save as a jpg. Be sure you do not save over the original file or you will loose the ability to edit your cover. Check out the how to page to learn how to crop your edited book cover.

Book Formatting

Do I need a TOC (Table of Contents) in the printed version of my book?

Most fictional novels do not include a Table of Contents. Some longer books with several parts include them. Basically, it’s an author preference for printed fiction.

In non-fiction works, a table of contents is normal and recommended.

Will you create a copyright page?

Yes. A copyright page will be created. If your book already contains a copyright page, it will be created using the information provided. If not, one will be created from scratch.

What information is needed for the copyright page?

A copyright page includes The Book Title, the author name, year published, and a disclaimer.

Optionally and recommended. ISBN numbers for all book versions, (ebook, paperback, hardback, large print.) publishing company, editor, formatter, cover designer credits, website.

I uploaded my pdf, but it's not working for ebook!

PDF files are not excepted for ebook by many publishers. You must submit a .epub for the best results. Docs can be used, but they will loose  formatting styles.

Why does my ebook look slightly different than the print?

ebook devices are pre-loaded with specific fonts. Most publishers strip fonts from files since devices can only use fonts that are loaded on them. The font and font size is also set by each individual user.

ebooks are read using an html format, therefore can not handle as many design features as the print version. This is most common with non-fiction that contains checkboxes, ect. At this time, most devices do not support them and may change them into bullets.

Ebooks also differ from one device or app to another. Depending on what they are programmed to show.

What is the difference between reflowable and fixed epub files?

Reflowable epubs are the most common epub files used for ebooks. These types of ebooks are most desired by readers because it allows them to choose the fonts and font sizes they prefer on their devices.

Fixed formats show exactly the same in an ebook as they do in print. This is most commonly used for magazines or for children’s books that are largely image based and need the text to show on top of the image.

It is not a good idea to use a fixed format for fiction or non-fiction. It is understandable that as an author, your whole heart is in your book. You want it to look perfect. Formatting is one of those places when an author has to step back and yield to what is best for the end product and the readers who will one day read it. Going too far away from publishing standards could result in bad reviews and/or a loss in sales.
